NARS Skin Deep Eye Palette Review

NARS has launched the Limited Edition Skin Deep Eye Palette, the ultimate nude palette created for all skin tones. The eyeshadows consisting of rich mattes, lustrous shimmers and smoldering metallics are infused with the NARS Pigment Powder Suspension technology for a high-impact effect. Each eyeshadow can be used in a variety of ways, subtle to smokey to create your perfect nude look. For today’s post, I’m going to review the NARS Skin Deep Eye Palette.

The NARS Skin Deep Eye Palette is made of a sturdy plastic material and a velvet matte black exterior combined with champagne gold metallic details. I have a love/hate relationship with the velvet matte type of packaging NARS is known for. It looks beautiful at first but  it gets dirty with fingerprints and eyeshadow almost immediately. It does look modern and luxurious like all the “standard” packaging from the brand.

Opening NARS Skin Deep Eye Palette reveals twelve eyeshadows and a mirror. The eyeshadow pan sizes are different. The first row has bigger pans containing matte shades that are 3.5 grams each and in theory, are more frequently used shades. The other eight pans are smaller, contain 1.4 gram each and are what I consider, a regular pan size.

Here are the swatches of the NARS Skin Deep Eye Palette shades, swatched from left to right, top to bottom. The shades are described as follows:

TAUNT – Matte Cream
SOPHIA – Matte Rich Cool Brown
WHIPPED – Matte Warm Brown
UNDRESSED  – Matte Taupe Brown
BALI – Matte Deep Neutral Taupe
ICON – Shimmering Rosy Gold
BASIC INSTINCT – Shimmering Icy Rose
COCONUT GROVE – Matte Deep Brown
CENTERFOLD – Shimmering Grey Beige
CALENDAR GIRL – Shimmering Golden Brown
FASTER PUSSYCAT – Metallic Copper
UNBUTTONED – Shimmering Deep Brown

The eyeshadows feel soft, are pigmented and swatched evenly, except for the shade Coconut Grove. That shade is very “smokey” so it applies less pigmented and a bit patchy. Overall, I love the new formula of the NARS eyeshadows. They’re one of my favorite eyeshadow formulas but I do have to say that I normally like a more intense, foiled type of finish for my metallic/shimmery shadows. Even though these are very pigmented, I wish the shimmers would have a slightly stronger, reflective effect.

For this eyelook, I used the shade TAUNT as an overall base, SOPHIA in the crease and bottom lid, WHIPPED to deepen the crease, on bottom lid and on the inner and outer 3rd of the lids, BASIC INSTINCT in the middle of the upper and lower lid, CENTERFOLD in the center of the lid on top of BASIC INSTINCT and as an inner corner highlight and COCONUT GROVE to deepen the outer parts of the lids.

I’m a huge nude eyeshadow palette lover so I have to say that I’m very biased to these kind of shades. Combined with the NARS eyeshadow formula, I find this palette to be pretty amazing. I think it has a beautiful combination of shades, which I can see work for all skin types. I really like that it has a nice variety of cool, warm and neutral shades. I also think the bigger pans for the mattes are a good idea, because I can definitely see myself wearing an all matte eyeshadow look using only one of these shades. The only few criticisms that I have for this palette is that I’m missing a good inner corner highlight shade and that the shimmers are a bit muted for my personal liking.

If you’re looking for a good nude eyeshadow palette, that doesn’t have either only warm or cool tones, but a good variety of tones as well as finishes, I would suggest to check out the NARS Skin Deep Eye Palette.

The Limited Edition NARS Skin Deep Eye Palette is available for €55,00 Euro at DeBijenkorf.nl and at the De Bijenkorf warehouses in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht.
