The Body Shop is joining the Liquid Lipstick hype by introducing their Matte Lip Liquids. These lipsticks are available in twelve different shades, formulated to glide on effortlessly like a gloss while having the rich creamy colour and velvety touch of matte lipstick. I’ve received five shades of the The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid, which I will be showing you today.
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid ccomes in a non-transparent tube with a color that is resembling the shade it contains. The handle has a velvet matte black finish, which looks really cool but can look dirty very quickly. The tube contains 8 mL of product and has either black or white details, depending how dark the shade is. I think this it’s really nice that they thought of that, because I personally hate not being able to read details due to the background of the product being as dark as the text. The doe foot applicator is small and thin with a slanted tip.
Here are swatches of the The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid shades that I’ve received. The names are Windsor Rose, Nairobi Camellia, Goa Magnolia, Mauritius Dahlia and Sicily Iris, which are all city names and different types of flowers. The lipsticks are thick, creamy and feel as soft as a lipbalm when applying. All shades have a candy type scent, which reminds me of the heart candies that are popular during Valentines Day that have a word stamped in it. It isn’t a scent that I would prefer but it also doesn’t bother me either. The lipsticks are pigmented but not fully opaque, as you can see in the swatches. None of them dry completely, instead having a velvet matte finish. It does turn more matte over time. This also means that they do transfer and are prone to smudging.
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Windsor Rose
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Windsor Rose is a creme nude shade. The shade is beautiful but a bit difficult to apply. It’s streaky, tends to look grainy up close and breaks down quickly in the inner rim of my lips. I could fix this problem with adding an extra layer but if you tend to rub your lips together often, this might not be the shade for you because it will look uneven when doing so.
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Nairobi Camellia
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Nairobi Camellia is a warm, rosy pink nude shade. I really love how this shade looks on me, a perfect every day shade that will probably suit many skin tones. This shade applies easily, looks even and not streaky.
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Goa Magnolia
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Goa Magnolia is a raspberry pink shade. This is a type of shade that I have a weakness for. I really love how fun it looks, being bold but not too much either. This is another shade that applies easily, looks even and not streaky. This shade together with Nairobi Camellia are definitely my favorite of the bunch.
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Mauritius Dahlia
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Mauritius Dahlia is a berry shade. I love shades like this for this time of year. The shade looks beautiful but does needs some extra effort for application. As you could see from the swatches on my arm, the darker shades are a bit streaky since the shades are not fully opaque. I would suggest to use a lip liner before applying this lipstick to make it less streaky. I didn’t use any in my lip swatch so you can get an even application if you add an extra layer.
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Sicily Iris
The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid in Sicily Iris is a dark plum shade. I’m always in for a beautiful vampy shade like this one. Unfortunately, this is another shade that looks very patchy and uneven up close and is hard to apply. This shade would definitely benefit from a lip liner. I tried this the next day after taking this pictures and it looks much better with that. I really like these kinds of bold shades so I’m willing to make some extra effort for it.
I’m not completely sold by the The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid. On one hand, I love how the formula feels on my lips. It feels creamy and hydrating, which changes in a more matte finish over time so if you can’t handle drying matte liquid lipsticks, this might be an option for you. The shade range is also amazing, from nudes to bold shades that are all very wearable. What was most striking for me is that none of the shades, even the darker ones, do not stain at all. You can easily remove the lipsticks with a soft cleanser or tissue while still being long-lasting.
On the other hand, all shades emphasize every single flake on your lips. I have to admit that my lips were very dry when swatching these lipsticks and had to really scrub my lips until no flakes were present and it still looked grainy. So if you have dry, flaky lips (which is a real struggle with this type of weather), these will not look good on you. If you’re interested in getting these lipsticks, I would suggest to always use a lipbalm before applying the lipsticks. For the darker shades you should definitely use a lip liner before application.
The Matte Lip Liquids are available for €9,00 at The Body Shop stores and at TheBodyShop.nl.
