Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Eau de Parfum Review

Black Opium Eau De Parfum is one of the most popular fragrances launched in 2014 by Yves Saint Laurent, fascinating and seductively intoxicating. This fragrance is described as an addictive contrast between light and dark, with accords such as Coffee and Vanilla for women who are independent, determined and daring like Zoë Kravitz, the face of the fragrance campaign. For today’s post, I’m going to review the original YSL Black Opium Eau de Parfum.

The bottle of the YSL Black Opium Eau de Parfum is a re-design of the 2009 Opium fragrance bottle, which was developed by YSL art director Fabien Baron and Stefano Pilati. In comparison, this bottle has a more glam-rock look, with a textured, black metallic exterior in combination with a brown-toned transparent center. The design actually reminds me of a hip flask! I think it looks beautiful, bold and mysterious.

The notes of the YSL Black Opium Eau de Parfum is described as an addictive gourmand of Black Coffee, White Florals and Vanilla. The notes are described as follows:

Top Notes: Pink Pepper, Pear
Middle Notes:  Sambac Jasmine, Orange Flower
Base Notes:
Coffee Accord, Vanilla, Patchouli Essence

When I first spray on the perfume, I notice a fresh Pink Pepper scent in combination with the sweet warmth of Vanilla. After the initial scents, I can definitely smell Coffee and interestingly, I’m almost positive that there’s also an Almond accord in there, which is very noticeable to me when I smell the fragrance close to my skin. The warm fragrance of Vanilla lasts over time and even though I’m not good at distinguishing (white) floral scents, I do notice a Jasmine scent over time.

I really like the YSL Black Opium Eau de Parfum because I’m a fan of Warm and Sweet Gourmand fragrances. I definitely would consider this as a sexy and daring fragrance that lasts the entire day. I think this is a type of fragrance that would be more preferred to wear during the night, because it is on the heavier side. There are other versions available such as the YSL Black Opium Eau de Toilette, which is described as more bright and luminous.

YSL Black Opium Eau de Parfum is available in volumes of 30 mL, 50 mL and 90 mL at a variety of perfume stores and warehouses such as Douglas.nl and De Bijenkorf.

Have you tried one of the versions of YSL Black Opium? Which one is your favorite?
